UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced it has reached a deal with golf champion Jeev Milkha Singh of India to represent the company in conjunction with its sponsorship of the European Tour, one of the world's most prestigious professional golf tours.
Singh will represent UPS during tournament play and at various customer and promotional events alongside 2009 Race to Dubai champion Lee Westwood and 2008 European Tour Rookie of the Year Pablo Larrazabal, who began their association with UPS in 2009. Singh also will wear the UPS brand mark on his shirt while competing this season on the Asian Tour and the PGA Tour.
Owner of 18 worldwide wins, the former Indian Sports Personality of the Year had three Top 10 finishes on the European Tour last year, finishing the 2009 season ranked 34th on the Tour and 59th in the world. In 2008, Singh achieved six Top 10 finishes on the European Tour, including a win at the Austrian Open. Singh also was the Asian Tour Order of Merit Champion in 2008, earning him honorary lifetime membership on the Tour.
"We are proud to welcome Jeev Milkha Singh as a UPS brand ambassador," said Ron Rogowski, director of global sponsorships for UPS. "Jeev will add an exciting new dimension to our golf program, especially in India and throughout Asia where he has a very strong fan base."
As the Official Logistics and Express Sponsor of the European Tour, UPS provides key transportation and logistical support for the Tour's 53 events, which span two dozen countries on five continents. UPS also sponsors seven tournaments throughout the season, including the Ballantine's Championship, the BMW PGA Championship, the BMW International Open, the Barclay's Scottish Open, the Open Championship, the Barclay's Singapore Open and the Hong Kong Open.
"Moving the European Tour from one continent to another is a complex operation requiring dedication, precision and considerable expertise," said Rogowski. "UPS's sponsorship of the Tour gives us a unique platform to demonstrate all of our capabilities to existing and potential customers across the world."
"I am absolutely delighted to have a global company like UPS as a sponsor," said Singh. "We share the same hopes, aspirations and values while performance is at the heart of everything we do. The only thing that's different is our world ranking. They are No. 1."
