Mark Kemper, a 31-year UPS veteran, has assumed command as president of the company's new and expanded New Jersey District, directing small package operations in an area that covers parts of two states.
The New Jersey District is one of 20 new Districts dividing the United States activated earlier this year. It includes the northern portion of New Jersey to include Trenton and Newark and the southeast portion of New York state and features a package-delivery operation with some 11,000 employees.
Kemper most recently served as the manager of UPS's Metro New Jersey District, which has been consolidated into the new District. He began his UPS career in 1979 as a package handler in Lansing, Mich. He was promoted to business manager in 1987. Mark worked in special assignments in the Midwest Region and served as Labor Relations manager in the Michigan District prior to being promoted to division manager in the South Ohio District in 1991. After assignments in Corporate Schools, Corporate TSA Compliance and the Metro Philadelphia District, Mark was promoted to East Central Region operations manager. Mark became the Alabama District Manager in 2007.
UPS announced in January it was going to streamline its domestic management structure to improve overall performance by reducing the number of U.S. Districts from 46 to 20. Thanks to today's technology and the management strengths of its people, a District office now can oversee a much larger geographic area than in years' past.
As part of the realignment, UPS also is expanding its outreach to customers by strengthening local sales and marketing efforts. No package handling facilities have been affected by the consolidation of management offices, nor have any UPS drivers or package handlers.
