Rosemary Turner, a 31-year UPS veteran, has assumed command as president of the company's new and expanded Chesapeake District, directing small package operations in an area that covers all or parts of six states.
The Chesapeake District is one of 20 new Districts dividing the United States activated earlier this year. It includes Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia and features a package-delivery operation with some 15,000 employees.
Turner most recently served as the manager of UPS's Metro Philadelphia District, which has been consolidated into the new District. She began her UPS career in 1979 as a clerk in the Metro Los Angeles District. She was promoted to business manager in 1985. Rosemary held positions in Security and accepted special assignments prior to being named District Security manager in 1991. After assignments in the hub, feeder and package operations, she was promoted to Prairie Mountain District manager in 1998. Rosemary also served as South California District manager before accepting her current assignment in 2006.
UPS announced in January it was going to streamline its domestic management structure to improve overall performance by reducing the number of U.S. Districts from 46 to 20. Thanks to today's technology and the management strengths of its people, a District office now can oversee a much larger geographic area than in years' past.
As part of the realignment, UPS also is expanding its outreach to customers by strengthening local sales and marketing efforts. No package handling facilities have been affected by the consolidation of management offices, nor have any UPS drivers or package handlers.
