Saskatoon Student Receives Scholarship from The UPS Foundation

Rosalyn Strobl, 18, a recent graduate at Holy Cross High School in Saskatoon, has been chosen as one of 134 winners of a James E. Casey Scholarship, an annual award presented by The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The scholarships are awarded to children of UPS employees.

James E. Casey scholarships range from $8,000 to $24,000 over four years of undergraduate study. Winners are determined through a nationwide competition conducted by the Scholarship America (SA), an independent organization.

"A college degree can help open the door to great opportunities," said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "We are proud that these scholarships will support the children of UPS employees in their goals of higher education."  

Scholarship winner, Rosalyn Strobl, daughter of Richard and Maria Strobl of Saskatoon will attend the University of Alberta in the fall. Her father is employed as a full-time driver at the UPS facility in Saskatoon.

Strobl was on the Principal's Honour Roll from grades nine to 12, received the Academic Excellence Award in grade nine, 10 and 12, she was a recipient of the Governor General Medal (highest combined academic average for grades 11 and 12), the University of Toronto National Book Award, and the University of Alberta Academic Excellence Scholarship. Strobl was also recognized with the Outstanding Contribution award for her involvement with her senior girls soccer and junior badminton teams – all while maintaining a 97 per cent average. Rosalyn gives back to her community by volunteering once a month with Habitat for Humanity building and repairing houses.

Established in 1964, the James E. Casey Scholarship is named for one of the founders of UPS. The small Seattle, Washington, messenger service he started in 1907 along with several other teenagers has become the world's largest package and express delivery company. More than 3,250 James E. Casey Scholarships have been awarded, totaling more than $36.6 million, since the inception of the program.

In 1998, UPS opened the program to children of part-time UPS employees. As a result, the company will award 26 scholarships to these students, in addition to the 108 scholarships for children of full-time employees.

Strobl was awarded her scholarship certificate by John Dumigan, UPS Prairies Division Manager, in a presentation ceremony at the Saskatoon facility on June 2, 2010.
