Commitment to Social Responsibility Reflected by UPS Pro Bono Work

100 Companies Sign on to the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge

UPS (NYSE: UPS) has joined with Corporate Pro Bono (CPBO), Pro Bono Institute (PBI), Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and 99 other major corporations in their dedication to corporate social responsibility through pro bono legal work. The UPS Legal Department has signed on to the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge, a simple, voluntary statement of commitment to pro bono service by legal departments, their lawyers and staff.

"Not only is participation in this program good corporate citizenship, but it also fills a very serious need for legal representation to poor and indigent clients," said Laura Stein, senior vice president and general counsel of The Clorox Company and CPBO Advisory Board Co-Chair.

More than 20 members of the UPS Legal Department have worked on pro bono projects in 2010, giving almost 1,400 hours to local communities. In the past year, the UPS Legal Department has worked on service projects with Street Law, Inc., Georgia Justice Project, Atlanta Legal Aid Society and Hillside, Inc.

"Volunteer service is an integral part of the UPS culture," said Teri McClure, senior vice president of legal, compliance and public affairs and general counsel.  "Investing even a little time in others can truly make a difference in the community and yourself."

"CPBO was able to identify a desire to give back among the in-house legal community and then couple that with the growing trend of corporate social responsibility, not only in the United States, but globally," stated Brad Smith, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of legal and corporate affairs at Microsoft Corporation, and co-chair of the CPBO Advisory Board. "The outcome is this incredible list of companies that have publicly declared their commitment to pro bono; a list that we know will continue to grow far beyond 100."

Walmart recently became the 100th Corporate Pro Bono Challenge Signatory, joining an elite group committed to corporate responsibility through pro bono legal work.  UPS has been a signatory of the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge since 2006. The CPBO Challenge 100 is an important milestone that recognizes the stature and leadership of the companies that have committed to the Challenge and seeks to increase momentum and pro bono culture within the corporate community.

The rising trend in corporate social responsibility has had a significant impact on major corporations, nationally and worldwide, and pro bono is quickly becoming an important aspect of that trend. The Corporate Pro Bono Challenge gives in-house legal departments the opportunity to build on already existing CSR programs, while enabling in-house attorneys to use their unique and vitally important skill sets for the greater good.
