Ninety-Nine Non-profit Representatives Graduate from the UPS Non-profit Organization Management Training Program
SHANGHAI, CHINA, August 4, 2006 - Representatives of non-profit organizations (NPOs), the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, and UPS gathered today at a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the first level of the UPS Non-profit Management Training Program, launched in April by the president of The UPS Foundation, Ms. Evern Cooper Epps.
The UPS Foundation—the charitable arm of UPS—partnered with a Chinese NPO, the Capacity Building and Assessment Center (CBAC), to offer the three-day “NPO Basics” course to 99 employees from 56 NPOs in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. This initiative is part of The UPS Foundation’s ongoing efforts to enable NPOs to serve communities more effectively around the world.
“At UPS, we believe that training and skill development opportunities are critical to ensuring that our over 400,000 employees across the globe work together as one team,” said Mr. Richard Loi, senior vice president of UPS China. “Management training is also important to the non-profit sector, and we hope these skills will enable the participating non-profits to help disadvantaged members of society more effectively.”
The objective of the training program is to help non-profit organisations that are dealing with poverty alleviation and education to increase transparency and improve resource management, so they are better equipped to support China’s efforts to achieve sustainable development. CBAC’s curriculum covers skills critical to running successful programs, ranging from volunteer and human resource management to financial accounting and project planning.
“We believe that companies can increase the long-term impact of their philanthropy by helping non-profits improve their professional skills,” said Ms. Zhang Jufang, Director of CBAC. “Businesses and NPOs can learn a lot from each other - it’s very exciting that so many UPS volunteers came to attend the training.”
UPS employees in China played an active role in the program, both by nominating local NPOs to participate and by attending the training. The UPS volunteers were able to learn more about the challenges faced by the non-profit sector, while sharing their ideas and experience. Coming from diverse departments - including finance, human resources, marketing, business development, and supply chain solutions - they were able to provide a variety of perspectives during the program. Some UPS employees volunteered as guest trainers, giving presentations on their areas of professional expertise.
Today’s event also launches the second stage of the program: NPO trainees will be invited to apply for on-site training for their entire staff by CBAC. One organization in each city will be chosen to receive the additional training and mentoring support, with the goal of identifying organizational strengths and weaknesses in order to develop a long-term development plan. These organizations will in turn share their experience with other NPOs operating in the area.
