UPS’s Health Coaching Program

The health and well-being of UPS people is a top priority at UPS. We strive to improve the health and well-being of our people by making them smarter healthcare consumers. By launching a unique health coaching program staffed by registered nurses and supported by comprehensive online tools, we believe this program will help UPSers get the most out of their healthcare benefits.

UPS Healthy Connections—Informed Choices Program
Eighty-five percent of UPS’s $2.6 billion healthcare spend is generated by approximately 15 percent of our covered population. Since chronic and complex healthcare conditions account for a significant portion of UPS healthcare spending, we knew we needed to think outside the box to come up with additional solutions that support our people beyond the actions they are currently taking.

Ultimately, we decided to offer health coaching and asked two companies that normally compete to work together to develop and administer a program for us called the UPS Healthy Connections—Informed Choices Program. This cutting-edge health program provides access to health information, health decision support tools and valuable health resources that empower employees while offering the personalized support of a health professional to those who need it most. As of February 2007, approximately 300, 000 US-based employees and their family members are eligible for this program.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Health coaches (registered nurses or other qualified health professionals) employed by United Health and Aetna act as advocates for the employee or covered family member’s health. As employees of the health plan claims administrators, the coaches use prescription, doctor, and hospital claims data to determine outreach efforts.
  2. A health coach may contact one of our people and offer his/her support. This service is optional, free and confidential to UPS employees and their family members. Additionally, covered individuals can request the support of a coach.
  3. Health coaches work with UPS people to determine which programs or benefits will be most helpful. Coaches provide access to online resources and other relevant educational materials and schedule consultative phone calls to help our people understand and follow their doctor’s treatment plan.
