UPS Environmental Facts At-A-Glance
With more than 94,500 vehicles, 2,909 facilities and as the ninth largest
airline worldwide, UPS faces significant challenges to reduce environmental
impact. UPS's dedication to the environment is evident throughout its operations.
Since the 1930s, UPS has been continually striving for environmental innovation
and improvement. UPS environmental highlights include:
- 126 million: The number of miles driven by UPS alternative fuel vehicles since 2000, making deliveries to homes and businesses.
- 84 million: Total sheets of paper saved each year by integrating
the hand-held Delivery Information Acquisition Devices (DIADs) which electronically
record delivery information. This saves 7,308 trees a year.
- 124 million: The number of sheets of paper that could be eliminated annually if UPS customers converted to Paperless Billing.
- 86 million: The number of sheets of paper that could be eliminated if international UPS customers converted to Paperless Invoice.
- 15 million: The amount of money UPS has invested to deploy significant numbers of alternative fuel vehicles in its fleet.
- 19.7 million pounds: Amount of electronic equipment recycled by UPS since 2000.
- 330,000: Amount of quarts of oil saved since implementing
Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs), saving the company almost US$3
million annually.
- 94,542: Number of vehicles in the UPS fleet. Our "green" fleet includes:
- Nearly 20,000 low-emission vehicles in North America
- 709 total number of propane-powered vehicles UPS operates in Canada and Mexico
- 707 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles (the largest private fleet in the United States), and an additional 167 will be added in 2008
- 50 Hybrid Electric Vehicles that operate in Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and Atlanta
- 11 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tractor-trailers (the first LNG tractors in the world)
- 2 zero-emissions vehicles that operate in Manhattan, NY
- 1 hybrid hydraulic vehicle
- 11,000: Number of UPS computers at
four facilities
with "sleep" software installed to conserve energy when not in use, saving
the company as much as US$145,000 annually, as part of the ENERGY STAR Million Monitor Drive program.

the primary power source for the UPS facility in Palm Springs, California
