Newport Beach, CA (June 1, 2004) - Orange County's United Way announced today that in 2003-2004 US$22.65 million was raised to address Orange County’s most critical health and human care issues. One hundred twenty-five local nonprofits receive funding through Orange County's United Way each year.
“The task of raising funds in times like these is difficult, but we are proud to be able to continue to focus on accountability, leadership and local results,” said Orange County's United Way President Maria Chavez Wilcox.
United Parcel Service (UPS), whose Orange County base is in Aliso Viejo, received two awards including the Dimensions in Giving Award, Orange County United Way’s highest philanthropic honor, for raising over US$567,000. For the fourth year in a row, UPS and its employees nationwide led the U.S. in supporting local United Way’s throughout the country. Nationally, UPS and its employees donated US$54.2 million to the United Way in 2004, an all-time record.
“This award celebrates the dedication of the company and its employees for committing their time, energy and resources to help Orange County be a better place to live. Their generosity will truly impact thousands,” said United Way campaign chair, Rob Kent of IBM.
Hundreds of local companies ran campaigns and contributed to Orange County's United Way each year. Of those, twenty-six companies were awarded along with UPS in various categories for their volunteer efforts and charitable contributions to the organization at a “Campaign Celebration” at the Balboa Bay Club on Tuesday evening. Bank of America and Wells Fargo provided major support for the event.
