Funds Help Rebuild Homes, Lives

ATLANTA, Oct. 1, 2004 - In response to the destruction from last month’s hurricanes, The UPS Foundation is donating US$225,000 among three relief organizations including the American Red Cross of Charlotte County, Fla.; the American Red Cross - Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter, and the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

“With thousands of employees and several major facilities throughout Florida, UPS has seen first hand the devastation caused by the hurricanes,” said Evern Cooper, president of The UPS Foundation and vice president of UPS’s corporate relations initiatives. “Through donations to relief organizations, we are dedicated to helping our neighbors in these regions overcome, rebuild and regain normalcy in their lives.”

Donations provided by The UPS Foundation are helping Florida communities meet urgent needs for housing, personal care items, rental assistance and aid for the elderly. In addition, funds provided emergency support to more than 200 shelters for individuals impacted in South Georgia. Organizations receiving donations are:

  • American Red Cross of Charlotte County, Fla.: The Charlotte County chapter of the Red Cross was effectively closed by the financial strain of Hurricane Charley. UPS funds are helping to re-establish this chapter and reopen its fire relief assistance and Community Disaster Education Program.
  • Florida Hurricane Relief Fund: Established by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the fund provides financial resources for needs unmet by other disaster relief organizations. At the request of UPS employees in South Florida, UPS funding will be used to help re-build communities in Sarasota County.
  • American Red Cross - Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter: UPS funds will support efforts to create more than 200 shelters and provide a myriad of social services for hurricane victims in South Georgia, as well as for Floridians who took shelter in Georgia during the hurricanes.

Although UPS service throughout South Florida resumed quickly following the storms, UPS and its distribution network were not left untouched. UPS facilities in Port Charlotte and Fort Pierce were heavily damaged while the closing of ports and clogged highways hampered deliveries. The company has established a number of satellite facilities and pick-up locations in affected areas.
