Larger aircraft connecting Warsaw & Hong Kong marks further expansion of UPS’s smart global logistics network as export volume from Poland grows by more than 30%

UPS (NYSE:UPS) is announcing today increased air cargo capacity for its Warsaw to Hong Kong flight with the introduction of a larger capacity aircraft, the Boeing 747-400. The expansion is part of the continuous transformation of UPS’s smart global logistics network, which carries three percent of the world’s GDP every day.

“Poland has a strong and growing export-focused economy, and UPS’s export volume to destinations around the world grew by more than 30% last year,” said Piotr Sitarek, country manager, UPS Poland. “Hong Kong is an attractive growth market for Polish companies seeking cross-border trade opportunities, and the value of exports has nearly quadrupled between 2010 and 20171. By deploying a new aircraft with 25% more capacity to better connect Poland and Hong Kong, UPS is committed to helping its customers in the apparel and consumer goods, high tech and industrial manufacturing sectors be part of the growth that we see when businesses reach out to new markets.”

The Warsaw to Hong Kong flight leg is part of a wider international connection. The Europe-to-Asia flight route begins and ends at UPS’s European air hub in Cologne, Germany. After arriving in Hong Kong, new package and freight volume bound for the Middle East and Europe is loaded and the aircraft returns to Cologne via Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Improving the capacity of this vital Europe-Asia connection, the Boeing 747-400 has nearly 25% more cargo capacity compared to the MD-11 that it replaces on the four-time weekly flight.

The increased capacity on this flight is a result of strategic investments to increase UPS’s global air cargo capacity. UPS is adding a total of 40 additional aircraft to its fleet, including 28 state-of-the-air Boeing 747-8 aircraft. The new freighters will   increase UPS’s intercontinental air express capacity by more than 10%.

This announcement comes as UPS is investing $2 billion in its European infrastructure and services while the company continues to transform its smart global logistics network for customers around the globe. UPS is in the midst of its most comprehensive transformation in decades, prioritising resources and directing investment for the greatest strategic benefit and long-term shareholder return. Early in 2017, the company announced plans for extensive upgrades to its smart global logistics network, enhancing efficiency and capacity through the use of state-of-the-art processes, information technology and automation.
